http://java.sun.com. There are multiple books and tutorials available. You can also take a peek at developerworks on the IBM site that has a section targeted at new developers.

you could try my easy to follow, visual, java notes at:
http://www.thanassis.com/java/java%20training%20course/index.htm

I've tried my best to make the notes comprehensible and easy to go through, but also extensive. No speeches there but lots of pictures & many diagrams. Also lots of examples.

good luck
