I lived in Biloxi....if you know you could die then I'm sure you could find a way to leave. Maybe people need to have there cable tunred off and stop getting there hair and nails done if it puts them in debt.

I'm not sure which article everyone has read. The article I read said that FEMA paid out over a billion dollars more than it was supposed to. It would seem that the 'stupid' people had enough wits about them to dip deep into the taxpayer's pockets without anyone knowing that they had already been paid once or twice.
The Bush administration had an opportunity to prevent this disaster long before it happened. The Army Corp of Engineers wanted to upgrade the dikes and asked for money to do it. The request was vetoed and what money there was went to Iraq to fight a war which was never justified.
It would seem from a safe distance that the good people of New Orleans had an opportunity to safely flee. It's always interesting to hear from people who were at a safe distance criticize the response efforts. The unfortunate fact probably reveals that the majority of the people had no opportunity to safely flee.
One thing that I do question of people is why they want to populate major metropolitan areas to the degree of over-saturation. As we witnessed in New York, a disaster will have an over-burdened impact on any area that is heavily saturated.
We already knew that the storms were hitting harder. I think we can all agree that the evacuation should have begun far sooner. To be quite honest, I don't understand why anyone would want to live so near the coast below sea level. Knowing also, the decaying characteristics of the dikes. Living anywhere, I guess, requires careful assessment of the powerful elements which can sweep an entire community away.

I do think it's time for FEMA to let the people who can stand on their own feet, but there is still a lot of devastation in LA and a lot of people still need help.

More importantly, I think FEMA needs to be more careful about checking peoples credentials. They need to set up some sort of system against fraud.

I don't agree at all, that everyone who was left there is stupid.

In fact I find this question offensive.Until 8/05 I lived in New Orleans LA, my family left before the storm, but I know for a fact that while some people did stay because they wanted to a lot of people stayed because they had no means of leaving, and a lot of people who tried to leave ran out of time and were trapped there.

So no,while I don't think much of the people who could leave but stayed, I don't think the ones who couldn't leave are stupid, just unfortunate.

EDITED TO ADD:

You lived in Biloxi, so I suspect all what you think you know about the poverty in NO is what you've seen on tv or heard in the news. But most of the poor people in NO got into debt just trying to live, not getting their hair or nails done, not paying for a cable bill.

And you may not know this but it isn't easy to just pack up everything you own.

In that last day or so what I saw was people trying to pack up their lives, and trying to board up their houses so maybe there'd be something to come back to. And there just wasn't time enough.

Thousands of people died. Many more went back to find there was nothing left of their homes. Theres friends I've had for years that still haven't been able to locate today. Don't tell me we deserved that. No one deserved what happened. What gives you the right to say otherwise.

There may be more to it than meets the eye, ya know? ( I used to sort of feel the same way you do until I heard the story of the woman who wouldn't leave ( Katrina ) because she couldn't find her 15 yr. old daughter .) :)
