I am a reader and writter of horror fiction and have found that a great deal of it is based on the authors dreams and nightmares. So apart from simply increasing my dream recall is there anything that I can do to induce nightmares?

Yes. It's called dreamscaping. You simply force yourself to think about horrible things or worry very hard all day long and this will influence what you dream about. You can do the same to cause yourself sweet dreams.
Try thinking about one particular horrible thing all day. For example: terrified of fire? Think fire.

How To Induce Nightmares

This is kind of unorthodox, but many people who use nicotine patches to quit smoking have reported nightmares and strange dreams if they sleep with them on. As a result, many doctors suggest removing the patch before you go to sleep. I know my husband had terrible nightmares when he used the patch to quit smoking. I would try other people's suggestions first, though :)

Once I was wondering about how would be my post-mortem appearance.... and I dreamed my corpse semi-buried close to a tree (ouch... it must have hurt), but hey, i finally saw my skinny version (what?, i like to see the glass half-full).

If it doesn't work, enroll yourself in a job where your boss can call you at home anytime... that can produce seriously creepy dreams. Just last night I dreamed about my mom inviting my bosses home to have dinner... good news, the phone woke me up from the nightmare... bad news, it was my boss!!!

Two green apples works every time. Then set the alarm to go off 20 minutes ahead of when it normally does and take a paper and pencil to bed with you.

give yourself a stomach ache by eating wheat or other foods bad for you. and lots of it. Go to bed and ask for nitemares. think about wanting to hurt someone or something. There are many other ways: get really confused about some aspect of your life... especially relationships, work, etc. to name a few

I would eat large meals of fatty foods, and watch terrifying horror films, or the news.
