Clapton for studio stuff, Hendrix for live stuff.

Hendrix was more innovative but kinda limited to psychedelic/electric and strange stage antics. A lot of people can play the same nowadays, for example, Stevie Ray. (Dead as well, but you get the idea.) Hendrix was a product of his generation. Drugs did him in. Clapton is highly-versatile and diverse. Drugs almost did him in as well, but he managed to quit them. Blues, gospel, rock, some country, a little pop, backup guitar with groups like The Beatles, good solo but also with bands like Cream. Deeper, I'd say. We didn't get a chance to hear what Hendrix could have become if he'd made it out of the 60s. Not so with Clapton. Hendrix came and went inside the span of Clapton's career. I love Hendrix and Clapton, but I would say that Clapton is better.

that's like asking: Dylan or Simon? There was No One Else In Hendrix's Genre!!!! his style of music transcended Style, description, or catagory. Clapton was certainly one of the first: " Blue Eyed Soul " guitarists! there were many, but to put Hendrix and Clapton... who's the best? are you kidding????
Saint Gillian.

I think Clapton has more versatility - but who knows where Hendrix would be today...he was a true innovator.

Without a doubt clapton..then srv and carlos santana.
i know many loved hendrix including the 3 men i named above...but i personally feel he was over rated and relied too much on gimmickry rather than musicianship.
