Are you thinking of the Berkshires? If you only have six days, maybe you could take a ferry over to Provincetown from Boston. That way you aren't paying for gas to get to the Cape and spending so much valuable vacation time on the road. If you don't like P-town, Plymouth is close to Boston and you won't have to worry about Cape traffic. Plymouth has beaches, boats, history, downtown, and a state forest. Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard might be a pain to visit, 1.5 or 2 hour drive, boat trip to, boat trip back, 1.5 or 2 hour drive back to Boston. Cape Cod is beautiful anyway.
Some key points about New England this time of year:
Beaches
Recreation in parks, etc.
History (USS Constitution, Mayflower 2, Bunker Hill, etc.)
Canoby Lake Park in Salem NH (amusement park)
Sports
Shopping
Aquarium, Museum of Science, JFK library, Faneuil Hall, in Boston.
Spend at least two days in the City of Boston. There is a feeling about the people and the history that you need to really absorb.

My wife and I are actually going to Boston tomorrow for a few days.
We're planning to take a ferry out to Provincetown for a day.
Friends of mine from Boston, say that if you have a choice, go to Nantucket over Martha's Vineyard. Say it's more real and less millionaires.
Also New Bedford for a real New England fishing village.

Fenway.... try to get tickets to a game, itll be pricy, but its worth it... Check out Boston Beer Works while your in the area.
Also check out Harvard Square in Cambridge, and the Boston Common.
If your in the Back Bay, you can check out Cheers.
Newbury Street is also fun to walk down, and they have all these little outdoor cafes with delicious food where you can grab lunch and people watch.
The Hamptons? Thats in New York. If you talking about Hampton Beach in NH, its gross. Drive a little further north to Maine or go to any Cape Cod beach - much nicer!
