I have seen the space station go over my house several times. No telescope is needed, just your eyes. It looks like a bright star moving across the sky. You might mistake it for an airplane flying high if you were not expecting to see it, although there would be no blinking lights. It just takes a couple of minutes to fly over and is only visible just after sunset or just before sunrise, when the sky is dark but the station is still in full sunlight. NASA has a web page that will predict sighting opportunities for many locations.

The International Space Station is easily visible to the naked eye, given reasonable observing conditions (clear sky, not light pollution, etc.). It looks like a very bright star moving across the sky. See sources for more details, and for a website that will generate a schedule of times and sky locations that the ISS will be visible at your geographic location.

JPL has lots of information on the station and how to see it. Just check out my resources.

The easiest way to tell that it's a satelite or the space station is that it moves in the wrong direction compaired to the stars and at a different rate. Also with binoculars you can see more of the station than you can of a satelite.

Though funding cutbacks have kept the size smaller than originally planned, it can be seen very easily. (Keep those checks pouring in). Go to www.nasa.gov/jtrack for a great satellite tracking program. If it goes over your area, a bright white fast moving item.

Check out the site heavens-above.com It will give you times and where to look for the ISS and other satellites. It is a really kick butt site. The ISS is bright when visible at your location.

you can see it from earth, but you have to have the sky resonable clear. The twinkle flashes from red to other colors and it moves faster compared to anything in the sky.
