Please check your facts. The BSA are not funded by the US Government. There is minimal indirect support at the Federal level such as use of facilities on military installations for Troops chartered on-base or located within the military community overseas.

They are a private non-profit organization, funded by private donations. In fact, much of this funding has dried up because of their discriminatory practices.

As a private organization, they cannot be compelled to practice non-discrimination; they are legally free to bar anyone or any group that they wish to exclude.

Many state and local governments have chosen to withdraw indirect support such as use of community facilities because of their discriminatory practices.

I think that in some things that the Boy Scouts of America should be funded by the US governmentbut then part of the expereance of being a boy scout is doing all of the fundraisers to go to scout camp and other things like that.
I come from a troop that is funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints, and they pay for each boy in the troop, team, and crew to join but then we need to go out and find some fundraisers for us to be able to attend a official boy scout camp.

On the funding of the Boy Scouts by the governmemt, my son and I have been members for 6 years and we have never seen any money from the government. We have always held fund-raising events for all the money we got. Th eBoy Scouts also are not a religious organization. They do not discriminate a boy from joining because of his religious beliefs. They have awards for different religions that can be earned by the boys, no matter what their belief.

Since it is a private group it should be able to choose its members. There are many places that only allow women or men. I cant go join the girl scouts so that is discrimination also. It is also a religous group so if the atheist wants to join they should deal with it. Maybe they can start their own group.

Only to the extent of protecting them from the ACLU and others that try to force their brand of religious persecution on them. They do not receive any federal funds, though, they are a non-profit organization funded by the free market people that promote their high values and ideals. They make men of boys.

Tell you what, read the facts below on that and other funding issues. They prevailed on that issue with the Supreme Court, and governments and municipalities put the brakes on - you'd have to explore individual governments if any left still do.

sounds like they've got the best of both worlds, dunnit?

no, they shouldn't be funded by gov't monies as long as they continue to hide behind the guise of "we're a private club, so we can say who is or isn't an appropriate candidate for scouthood."
