They were a part of the "San Francisco Sound" where a lot of pathbreaking, innovative stuff took place. For example, bands started writing THEIR OWN songs. This band and others lived together communally in one house. The role of the bassist(Jack Casaday(sp?) was more free and inventive. The SF sound featured a lot of "jamming" that people take for granted today....multiple lead singers and band songwriters... the "thing" that bands do is play "songs"and Jefferson Airplane's songs and those of their contemporaries have become classics....contrast this with many of today's bands and one could argue that many of today's bands CAN'T:write good songs, play their instruments in a variety of styles/influences, ARRANGE their songs or come up with their own style....HOW MANY of today's bands will be known in 10 or 20 years?????Where is TODAY's Hendrix, Beatles etc???? i feel very qualified to answer your question. i was a kid when The Jefferson Airplane came out. they came out of San Francisco. it was an era. it was the summer of love. ask me whatever you want i will try to answer you as best i can. i was there!!!
the original band didn't have Grace Slick ( she got the last name after marrying- i think the bass player; Darby Slick. after White Rabbit, and Somebody to Love came out the world couldn't get enough of The Jefferson Airplane. they came out of the same cool, hippie-period. The Grateful Dead, Canned heat, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix... ask and you shall receive; Saint Gillian.
