Of course. The world cup is the greatest sports stage in the world. The world cup is the world's best fighting for a gold trophy.
People might say that olympic soccer is close but it is not seeing that no professionals can play. The world cup is the best.

Is the World Cup a very professional soccer? LOL!!! Sorry but I could not help but burst out laughing after reading your question. Yes the World Cup is the highest level of football and winning it is every footballers dream. You could argue that the UEFA Champions League provides the same level and maybe even higher level of soccer but in terms of passion, fans and sheer awe it comes nowhere near the world cup. If a footballer can make it big in the world cup then it will give his career a huge boost.

I don't know what do you intend for "professional" in the contest of the World Cup, but the competition is the most important achievement that a Team (and the players) can have in football.
Countries from all over the world compete to participate in the World Cup and players from any professional team aspire to be part of their National Team.
Players do no receive big monetary compensation in joining their National Teams, but the reward is unthinkable for their pride (and their professional carrier).
I see few incorrect information in some other ppl answers:
in the Olympics professional soccer players CAN play.
In fact the 1992 Barcelona Games proved to be the turning point in the Olympic soccer tournament, when the men's tournament was competed as an under-23 event for the first time.
Also in Atlanta '96 the men's tournament adapted from its under-23 format in 1992 to include three "wild card" players. "Wild card" players were those players who either over 23 years of age or had previously played in an Olympic Games soccer tournament.
Also, in the World Cup any soccer player of his own Country can play, indipendently if he is a professional or not.

Dude, rephrase your question.
The various leagues are professional football, like the EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A and others. Cos the players get paid for playing for the various clubs. It is an honor to be representing your country in the World Cup. Although they don't get millions of dollars for playing for their country, they get the love of millions of adoring fans. Sometimes they get knighted. If a player shines at the World Cup, when the club season starts, you can be sure that he will be a hot commodity because he will be wooed by a lot of clubs. That is how he becomes a millionaire.
