the question can be tricky since it is merely in mind.
different answers can be found by referencing different religion.
May be for christianity, existence is to have God's will and plan. To Islam, may mean to surrender to Allah. Buddhism is to overcome our ignorance, our craving to existence. and many many others. (correct me if i'm wrong since i took religion name)
but i think it is better to find the essence of living rather than essence of existence. to live instead to exist.
and somehow you just have to find yourself. to question yourself, to doubt yourself, to think and sometimes to 'not think', to see the world around you, etc.
love and compassion could be one of those essences.

the essence of existence is simple, you have a mind that was born into this world, and the way you react and feel is based upon the decisions in your life, witch is based upon the way you were raised, there is no god, there is just your part of history, then death
