Here is a list of steps to follow:
- Ensure you have a working sound card, a microphone and speakers connected to your PC
- If you have sound recording software installed use that. Otherwise you can use free-to-try software like Propaganda
- Write your script, and rehearse it
- Record the podcast using your software
- Convert to MP3 format, which is the most common format
- Upload the MP3 to your website or server
- Create an RSS feed of your podcast. Your software should do this for you (e.g. Propaganda).
Creating your own podcast is straightforward.
First, you need to ensure that you have:
- a soundcard
- a microphone
If you have both of these, launch sound recorder or your built in sound recorder.
Then comes the hard bit - recording the script that you have written, and having quality content.
Once that's done, upload your sound file to your site and allow people to download, ideally in MP3 format (there are many free WAV to MP3 converters out there as an internet search will show you).

Also consider syndicating your feed throuh RSS... list in directories such as iTunes to reach the widest possible audience.

Traditionally people have thought of podcasting and listening being just through the i-pod hence the word PODcasting of course.
But don't assume that this will be the case - people can listen to podcasts on all sorts of devices now, from their mobile phone through to their PC in addition to iPod.
They might even listen to it on their PSP - Playstation Portable - surely the coolest way currently around to listen to a podcast!
If you want to record your podcast on an ipod, then you can!
Your ipod will no doubt have a built in speaker, so you can use this and a mic to record your podcast.
Simply save to a 'voice recordings' play list on your ipod. It's easy to use, quick and simple. Of course the sound quality is not superb, but it will no for a standard podcast.

Download iTunes or load it on your computer with the enclosed CD that came with your iPod. Then plug your iPod into your computer with the included USB cable. Launch iTunes and it will automatically recognize your iPod. You can then buy songs from iTunes or rip your CD collection into iTunes (load a CD in your drive and then click the "import" icon in iTunes in the upper right corner). Finally syncronize your iPod with iTunes - it does this automatically when you plug it in to your computer and launch iTunes
