Yes the engine bay is large enough, but the amount of work and expense you would put into such a project would not be a terribly good use of your time or money. All sorts of other things would have to be changed. Transmission, motor mounts, exhaust, ignition, radiator, and the list goes on and on. It would be far more prudent to sell the car and buy one that already has the engine in it that you want.

One word...
"emissions"

Unless I am mistaken...the '96 V8 would have been a 4.6L rather than a 5.0. I don't know if the emissions will have to meet the year of manufacture for the engine or the actual car. As someone else already said about cutting. Anything is possible. Just how much work are you willing/prepared to do? Is it worth it?
Buy a 94+ Buick Roadmaster. Factory 260 HP LT1 engine.

I agree - the final cost will be crazy by the time everything is done correctly. You're better off selling and getting a 5.0 -.-
if you're into that body style, '94-'95 GTs have the same body and also came with the 5.0 =D

Yes it may take some lite mods to make it work, but Super fast when you get it in. They still made Push Rod engines with the 5.0's

it will fit, because i have one,you have to have the engine mounts from an older mustang though,i used some from a 89 model, and yes it is tight fit, headers are really hard to put on too,but this also can be done, when you go to change the plugs,it,s really tight in there,i have to loosen up the motor mounts, and raise up one side of the motor,,so have fun putting it in,and be patient.

Cut and fab anything is possible. Allot of things to be considered though. Mounts, engine angle, weight on suspension, frame strong enough? gearing? just to name a few.
