Some people have ADHD, why do they have it?

It just happens. I just took Introduction to Special Education for my Education degree and ADHD is classified legally as a disability. There have been some links to their amount of sugar intake and lack of discipline or any combination. But all in all, it's basically a disability that should be treated as any other: with respect. Don't blame the parents.

A couple of the other answers are right on the verge of the correct one. The answer is the ADHD and ADD are made up terms to label a distinct personality trait, not a disorder. Officials, doctors, and teachers think that if a kid can't learn well in our school system, then somethings wrong with them. Kind of a "square peg in a round hole" mentality. Their answer is to "fix" the peg to fit in that round hole. Why not find the hole that the peg fits into?

Try this theory on for size. What if instead of a disorder and a "normal" we look at it as to types of personality traits? In ancient societies, there were often two types. One that stayed in place while planting and carring for crops and another in which they were basically nomads due to following their food source around hunting it. So basically you would have to types of people in essense. Hunters and Farmers.

What makes a good farmer? Someone who follows steps to yield a crop (doing steps A, B, C, D, and E without skipping one), a great deal of patience, and the ability to stay organized. Isn't that the same approach that school systems take?

What makes a good hunter? Someone who has a lot of energy, is easily distracted (so if they are hunting an animal, a different animal doesn't eat them), very high risk taking, and always seeking out new ways to hunt. Sounds alot like the same characteristics of a person with ADD or ADHD, doesn't it?

I wish people would stop trying to treat people with medication because they happen to be different. Sure there are extreme cases where it might be advantagous, but those are pretty rare. Maybe find a better way to reach and teach those kids.

Nobody has adhd..There's no such thing. It's just an excuse for misbehavior. And the Dr's giving the kids "speed" as a "treatment" They shouldn't be allowed to practice. If the parents would do their job and discipline these kids - you would quickly see a marked "improvement" in their behavior. Instead they coddle and encourage it. And like I said the medical profession just follows along and hands out whatever the Drug Companies tell them to prescribe. Why do people have adhd? Because it's very profitable and an easy excuse for a parent to shirk their responsibility

I don't know where chica_zarca is getting her information but ADHD or ADD is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and NOT by eating too much sugar or not getting enough discipline as a child. Kindly research the topic and do not listen to those who get their knowledge from a fortune cookie or a cracker jack box. TY

"Chemical imbalance" is assumed.
It's a diagnosis that comes from the application of lithium
to "manic-depressives". The inference being that they lack
certain normalizing elements in their brain.

People have ADHD because we diagnose it. We make a category of behavior and then put them in the box. The 'misbehaving' child isn't engaged with the subject matter and must fight back against what doesn't make sense to him.

I blame television, chocolate, lack of attention. NOT THE KID.

*** agree with the answer below mine, for the most part.

I feel most if not all people have a form of ADD or ADHD. Now a days in school, who isn't diagnosed ADD/HD. It is way to common and we live in a world of giving our kids and ourselves drugs to correct all of our problems. When maybe we should pay attention to our kids more, show them more love and understand that switching them from med to med to med is not the best or only solution.

Why. That is the question of the century. My theory is that because of all the chemicals and hormones being added to all the foods that we feed our children, plus all the chemicals around us that are used for spraying bugs, fruits, vegetables, and the pollution, are breathed into the lungs of our children, are changing possibly the genes of our children, causing this disorder.

The brain is not properly formed, so the synaptic messages get scrambled.
