Well, that depends. "Puff the Magic Dragon" per the Peter,Paul and Mary song was a mythical"dragon" , or its spin-off, a Douglas C-47 transport aircraft from the WWII era, converted to become a gunship in the USAF. Using the call-sign "Spooky" it was named "Puff the Magic Dragon" due to the "fire" it spewed caused by line of illuminated rounds or bullets ,"tracers" rounds fired each 5th round. As time went along "Puff" simply became "Spooky" after its call-sign. So, was it magical or mechanical? Now you know the rest of the story.

(somebody was doin' that "Puff,Puff, give"....when they wrote that song).

"Ok Dude, let's sing about a Dragon, that lives by the sea,...and will call him "Puff".......these people were soaring high on some good ISH".
