My doctor said carpal tunnel...but in both hands? I'm scared it's something more.

Pain, numbness, and tingling are the classical signs of nerve damage.
Your doctor is undoubtedly right -- it's carpal tunnel syndrome.
You use both hands to type, don't you?

It may involve more than carpal tunnel; it could be you have fibromyalgia (tingling being one of many symptoms). See the links below. I have it and typing, mouse clicking, writing by hand, and repetitious activities can set it off. It can also bring on bouts of insomnia.
I limit my time at the computer whenever it flares up. Sometimes I get shoulder and neck pain and a mild headache that last for days. One of those microwavable "Bed-Buddy" bean bag things (hot / cold pack) really helps. But the best thing is to just stop repetitious activities like typing for a few days.

I would listen to the doctor a lot of people get carpal tunnel and minor sugery would correct it. I had the surgery about a year ago and I would do it again in a minute.

Some of my fingers stayed numb over a yr. then finally got better, but then some of my different fingers have gotten numb & stayed that way over a yr. AGAIN; my Doc, a yr. ago; X-rayed back of my neck & sent me to a Neuro-surgeon, who did MRI of back of my neck and told me it only showed up a small amount of arthritis and said that was normal of persons my age--in middle 50's. The neuro-surgeon told me to try B-vitamins---especially B-6 - i think it was; the vit's don't seem to help my numbness & tingling. Different ones go numb & then get better; the last few that have been numb over a yr. now --SEEM not to be as severely NUMB now; I hope they get as much Better as the other hand finally did.
I still don't know what is causing my numbness and tingling! Best wishes to you!!

Check to see if you sleep with your hands in a position that the nerve in you wrist is bent or restricted. Also some medications can cause this problem. My doctor also said my thyroid could cause this problem but I don't know if he was just rambling on.
