To me it is an obvious answer. The meaning of life is no different for humans than it is for any animal. We are here for one purpose and one purpose only, to adapt to our surroundings and procreate in order to keep our species alive. By continuing our species we insure that bits of ourselves will live on as long as the species survives.

Forget prescriptions that would save you thought and personal responsibility - the life-long adventure of growing up (adventures by definition are not comfortable). Regardless of ideaology or dogma we all define the meaning of our life by what we spend it on. Presume life itself, and awareness and the capacity for thought are all an accident - doesn't that make it far more amazing, wonderful, and precious than if it came from an act of Creation, with a prescribed agenda and priorities? Then look at the natural landscape, the clouds, stars, and the rest and reflect you are a distinct, unique and conscious part of that shifting whole. The awareness of "other", and of death, is what makes life worth living. The joy of that awareness can be enough - or you can enrich it further by pursuing deeper and wider awareness of "other" - and further again by putting personal effort into enriching the awareness of others, even if only part-time (e.g. by helping kids in a kindergarten, or working for better local/global political action). That's quite different from the ego-tripping of missionaries, seeking self-endorsement by imposing their ideas on others, by the way. There are plenty of ways of giving life meaning, (without being merely a slogan-driven do-gooder) when you give up being narcissistic, and discover what a joy it is to give yourself to others. They give themselves back, and thereby you find yourself valued. Is that a good enough reason to live, and a clue to meaning?

LIFE EXPLAINED.....
On the first day, God created the dog. God said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's too long to be barking. Give me ten years, and I'll give you back the other ten." So, God agreed.
On the second day, God created the monkey. God said, "Entertain people, do monkey tricks, make them laugh. I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "How boring...I have to do monkey tricks for twenty years? I don't think so. Dog gave you back ten, so that's what I'll do too, okay?" So, God agreed.
On the third day, God created the cow. God said, "You must go to the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer. I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, "That is really a tough life you want me to live for sixty years!
Let me have twenty, and I'll give you back the other forty." So, God agreed again.
On the forth day, God created man. God said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. I'll give you twenty years.
Man said, "What?! Only twenty years?! I tell you what...
I'll take my twenty, and the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back. Now that makes eighty, okay?"
"Okay," said God, "You've got a deal."
So......
That is why the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, and enjoy ourselves.
Then, for the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family.
For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren.
And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
