try checking your water temperature. I have a red eared slider and a painted turtle in the same tank and both are very social. I have noticed that if the water is too cool, the turtles tend to pull up into thier shells more. I suggest using a submersible heater and a basking light to keep the temp around 70-76.

I am not quite sure what you mean, so I will address both posibilities (land and water).

If the turtle is in the water and it does not stick his head out of the shell, it is not normal. Turtles in water should swim, hide and then come on land to bask. When the turtles comes out of the water to bask on a log or rock, it will usually stick his head and limbs out sort of like Superman flying through the sky.

If you grab the turtle from the water and place him on a rock, it will likely stay in its shell and not come out. It will dive in the water to feel safer.

Aquatic turtles (sliders, painteds, cooters, maps, muds, musks, etc) need to be in water to feel safe. They must come on land on their own accord or else they will not stick their head out

Now, if you have a semi-aquatic turtle, like a box turtle or a tortoise, these terrestrial turtles will tuck its head in the shell when they feel threatened. It will take time for them to feel comfortable around you. Food is always a good motivator. Move slowly and with time, they will eat out of your hand, or even follow you for food.

Whether you have an aquatic turtle or land turtle (boxie or tort), if it is hiding in the shell, it means it is not comfortable. With more human interaction, they will lose that fear, however, in the wild, they need that instinct to survive. Undoing it is fine, but turtles are not cuddly creatures like mammals and should be observed like fish and other similar creatures.

It needs a friend. Get another turtle. If it is a box turtle, they really aren't very social.

I have two turtles and I love them. Try taking it outside for a while and give it toys in it's living space. Turtles love climbing on stuff and like heat. Put a lamp on top of its tank and talk to it a lot. Take him out and let him run around if he does not walk or run them try to get it moving! GOOD LUCK!

if its a box turtle try putting it in water about 70 degrees f. it will come out. box turtles can swim so don't worry about it drowning. but don't leave it in the water to long it will get tired of swimming like a person and will drown eventually.

turtles arent social pets, theyre more for looks, as amatter of fact they will hiss at you. ive had two box turtles, evander and tyson, for a year and they dont want to be messed with they just want food, and shelter and to be left alone. you shouldve got a cat or dog for socializing. i have 2 cats, lil man and sugar baby, two forgs, pudge and chubby(their not social either) and a beta named sushi also.

depends on if its a water turtle. If the water is too cold, they go into false hibernation. You can buy a small water heater at any pet store.
