i am in support of putera. the question comes why we are spending a lot of money in them? might be that we can get a new planet where there is life? or we can get new clues to solve the generation/birth of earth? there are many mysteries beneath the oceans. we may also solve those. as par as the question about, what lies beneath the oceans, some one quoted that sand is there. its not true in all sense. there are many other things than this. for this governments of different countries are spending lots of money for research. these research are dealing on the scopes of new ores (like mg nodules), and other resourses.
however this question is interesting, but its not logical that if we dont know something truly, we dont have the right to explore other things.

Even though the others answered with sand and such i believe it's a good question. Sure we know whats at the bottom of parts but i do believe that knowing exactly is down there would be very beneficial. Considering the earth use to be one giant landform called pangea and broke away over years and years of plate movement im sure certain land forms and islands and things of the sort are probably undiscovered in the ocean. There isnt really a huge need to spend money on what is in space. We will never in our lifetime really know what is out there and we dont do anything with what we find. Wow the moon is round, less gravity, and has an american flag on it. What now... We might be able to use what is in our oceans for the good of economy.

There is a ship, its a bathyscaphe, one called the Treiste that back in the 60's or thereabouts made an epic descent into the Marianas Trench. I was reading a book about it called "Creatures of the Deep" by Erich Hoyt, a book that came out 4 or so years ago about deap-sea exploration. The pressure is so great there that not much lives at the very bottom of the hadal zone, a zone from 20,000 feet to 36,000 feet roughly. But they have found life in the abyssapelagic and mesopelagic zones of around 6,000 feet to about 20,000 feet for the two zones collectively. My point being, money is being spent to explore the deep oceans. Sea cucumbers live on the ocean floor.

Because space is more interesting I think. There's more of a chance of finding life or other stuff on distant planets than under the sea. We know mostly what's under the sea anyway. For the most part it's just bacteria and stuff in a lot of places (not even any fish) because the light can't reach that far, so nothing grows. Even where Titanic is, which isn't even the deepest part of the ocean, there's complete darkness.

Because space is so exciting and full of mysterious events..ranging from supernova explosion, black hole and so on.

Studying the outer space is just like discovering our earth, knowing who we are, where we come from and where we would end.

Space explorations also provide us with security..because we never know when is the next asteroid/meteorite gonna strike us...so thats why space study is importance.

In modern era like nowadays...space is become very important...as the saying goes "Who conquer the sky will conquer the world".

Numerous sattellites had been put on outerspace for military reasons, not forgetting for weather forecast reasons.

We also put sattellite in space for telecommunication reasons...without space exploration and technology, we wont be able to see events from the other part of the world.

Summing up...space is so important to us rather than to waste our money in deep ocean.

Yeah, that's a strange question which I've asked myself several times.

We should explore this planet first because there's A LOT that we don't know about it.

Rockets blasting off are sexy and appealing. A bathysphere slowly sinking is not.
