Before you do anything to your eyes, call the schools that offer aviation degrees or private pilot lessons and ask them what the sight requirements are.
My fiance' wears glasses and can't see more than to the end of his nose without his glasses and he is a pilot and a flight instructor.
He said he had some challenges to overcome but he managed to do it. Everytime someone told him "you can't", he proved that he could.
He's also instrument rated which means he can fly even if he can't see out the window, just by reading the instruments.
My fiance' doesn't work for a major airline, he works with a commuter service (like on the tv show Wings) and he helps students from the local university that are taking Aviation as a major pass their flight exams. He's been doing this for the past fifteen years.

I used to have more than 20/800 vision also, and wore glasses/contacts for 25 years before getting lasik surgery. Now I have 20/20 vision and there is no reason why they would not let you be a pilot if you have this operation. Otherwise they are very strict and you will not pass because of this handicap.

If you can get your eyesight fixed by surgery , and it is at an acceptable level by your countries standards for pilots, I personally don't see how they can refuse you. You have had a surgery and it permanently raised your eyesight to a better level of clear vision, so it would be considered as good vision period.

the military will accept people whose eyes have been surgically corrected but make sure that there are no other problems before you commit to surgery. For instance; does sudden sunlight make you sneeze? Then you can't fly jets for the govt.
