Yo, to call a woman a wench you couldn't possibly have any respect for her. Back in the days a wench was known as a common peasant girl. So in todays terms a wench will be equivalent to 1950's housewife, the cook, washer of dishes, cleaner, shall I go on? So ladies if you are called a wench at anytime in your lives, take offense!

Depending on tone of voice when being called a wench, it goes back to old times when young women were subject to slavery and at their owners disposal, and treated as property to do with as they pleased, including sexual behavior. Thus it can mean low in status, or low moral acting or lewd, not a compliment no matter how you look at it.

I disagree that it is necessarily derogatory. My first husband--we were 19--was a clever boy, and he used to call me things like "saucy wench", "lusty wench", "cheeky wench". I took it as something of a sexual compliment. We would even use the terms "tart" and "strumpet", not perhaps something you would say to a stranger, but we were being playful and sexual.

The denotative meaning of 'wench' is that of a 'girl or young woman'. The connotative meaning, however is somewhat derogatory. It can refer to a female servant or 'loose' woman. This term is more recognized and used in the U.K.

A pejorative term referring to a commoner. In days of old a noble would enter a tavern and say "wine wench". Would not advise saying it today to a server in a diner or bar.
