I'm a huge Royals fan and also a huge Mike Sweeney fan.He has played his whole career with the Royals and is known to be one of the nicest players in the game. This is the forth year in a row that he has spent significant time on the disabled list.He is signed through 2007.There has been talk of trying to trade him, making him some kind of coach, and even letting him just retire early. He is a huge fan favorite in Kansas City so what will be best for the fans and for him?

Sweeney has been one of my favorites and was a permanent fixture on my fantasy team due to his talent and being one heck of a great guy. Unfortunately he is also very fragile and is constantly acking with one thing or another. I don't think many teams are willing to pay his price tag, and eventually will end up signing for a very low contract full of performance incentives or as a role (read bench) player.

The first 4 1/2 months of 2003 were the worst thing that ever could have happened to the Royals. When they got out to such a great start and were leading the division past the All-Star break, Baird made the decision to push forward and Pena pushed the young pitchers way too hard....but why?

Because Mike Sweeney had gotten his contract worked out so that if the Royals didn't have a winning season in three of the four or five years of his contract, he could void the contract and become an unrestricted free agent....

Look what has happened since then....They brought in overpaid aged players like Lima and Juan Gonzales which didn't work...the young pitchers got hurt and/or never developed....Beltran and Ibanez go away...so they bring in more FA's this year..including every single Cardinal reject....and are amazed that there is no team chemistry, there's still no pitching, and they are the punchline to every single late night host's joke...and fire the GM.

And what's in common still to all these things?....An aged, overpaid, extremely poor defensive 1st baseman who can't stay healthy enough to earn his contract and the Royals couldn't give away if they tried....and believe me, they have tried.....

I know you don't want to hear this Royalsfan, but if the team is ever going to become competitive again, Mike Sweeney needs to be the very first one shown the door. Secondly, the new GM needs to make a plan and stick to it....like getting rid of all the old veterans like Reggie, Matt, and Mark, get as many kids in return and let them take their lumps on the major league level...and the owner needs to open up some of the Wal-Mart money he's got and spend it on real, upcoming talent and selective ptichers that haven't had arm problems.
