I'm looking to rent a cottage or cabin a place where the kids can play in the snow and I can sit by the fire. Maybe do a tourist thing or two. I just don't know where to go?

I would HIGHLY recommend Steamboat Springs. My parents and I went there every New Years until I was 18 and I have some amazing memories. The town is fantastic, lots of mom and pop shops and great shopping. There is also a place called Strawberry Hot Springs. The hot glacier water runs right down the mountain into two pools. The only thing separating the hot springs from the river are some rocks, so you can jump in the river with ice and snow on it and then back into the hot springs! On top of great shopping, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, and hot springs... There is some of the best skiing in all of Colorado! If you want anymore info on it, e-mail me... Basically if you look for places along I-70 (any of those ski towns) you should be fine. The pervious answer (Winter Park) is a good idea because its also close enough to Denver that you could also go down there if you wanted. Another nice place is the Breckinridge/Frisco area. There's a big lake called Lake Dillon there and that would be really fun for the kids. Vail is ok, but it's kind of touristy at times and very expensive.

I would stay away from the ski towns unless you are a skiier. But you could look on the fringe of ski resort areas. These places are usually much cheaper as skiers havea longer commute to go skiing, but that means a betterdeal for you. You are only guaranteed snow if you go with a high altitude destination.
PS the shining movie's exterior shots in the film were of Timberline Lodge in Oregon on Mt. Hood. But the book was 'inspired' by the Stanley Hotel.

Winterpark, Colorado is beautiful. I also recommend Estes Park. It is a little more touristy, but you can stay in the famous Stanley hotel, the one that "The Shining" is based on. But out of the two, I recommend Winterpark. It has a lot of great accommodations, and if you decide for a hotel instead of a cabin I recommend "The Vintage", but I'm sure that there are some amazing cabins around there.

One disadvantage to getting a place at a ski area in March is that it's filled with skiers! The prices are higher and the restaurants are crowded. They certainly are beautiful areas, but you might want to look at a place like Estes Park which has no skiing, but plenty of places like that to stay and a few things to do with kids. It's next to Rocky Mountain National Park which is just awesome in the winter. It's quiet and less expensive. I love it during off-season.
