It depends on what you are fishing for. What works one day, may not work the next. Just keep trying. Best advice, ask someone fishing in the area what the fish are biting on right at the moment....works for both fresh and salt water fishing..That's what I do. I caught a baby Hammerhead Shark in Florida using bait a pier fisherman told me use, (but I was not fishing for shark) and I have caught large mouth bass on lures and also on live bait in a lake that a fisherman suggested that I use. The older fisher people will give you great advice.

Well this is a very large question you have asked. The time of the day and the season is a factor in choosing lures to fish with.
If the fish are spawning is also a factor to figure into the catch equation. Also if the water is full of silt from a recent heavy rainfall is a factor in what color you should use to attract their attention.

Bass like minnows, and grasshoppers, and will bite the artificial flys that have fringed skirts , that are good for trolling .

Crappie 's go for small minnows, and jig baits, If they are spawning you won't get them to bite anything at all.

catfish like liver, worms, especially catalpa worms, dough bait, and catfish lures with the injectable scent.

carp will bite anything if it acts like it is dead. They don't like any kind of live bait. They will even bite a hook baited with corn.

bream like worms and grasshoppers. Use a cork to tell when you are getting the biggest bite as they are nibblers and don't bite hard, they just grab it and run with it.

Trout will bite at fluffy flies that are tied by hand . The color is a big consideration with this fish, as well as the water temperature when you are fishing. They are picky.

Best way to catch a fish... use a small number 8 hook, just tie it on your line, put two small size BB split shot about a foot above your hook -- put a 1"-2" piece of earthworm on the hook (just pass the hook through one time on the end of the piece of worm) -- and thrown your line in a shady spot. Don't use a bobber or nothin else -- just let the worm sink to the bottom and let it sit there for 30 seconds -- then move your rod tip 6 " ... repeat until you catch a fish. If you don't catch a fish in 10 minutes - move to another spot.

You'd have to be more specific as to what kind of fish you're targeting but a spinnerbait is prob. the most versatile lure out there for fresh water fish. It'll get you anything from muskies, pike, bass, walleye and more.

For most lake fish, worms, night crawlers and leeches are excellent baits. Now for river fishing like for trout, I would use fly tying lours. Good luck and catch a bunch.

Live baits--minnows, lizzards, worms, etc for most fish. Use chicken livers for catfish. Corn or salmon eggs for trout.
