It sounds like you changed the resolution on your monitor to an incompatible setting. It used to be that any resolution available would work, because your screen was always square. Now, though, you have the widescreen monitors, and that means that not every resolution on your settings tab is right for you. If you have a square monitor, be sure to use settings that are multiples of 640 by 480 (meaning 800 by 600 is also acceptable, as is 1024 by 768). If you have a widescreen monitor, be sure to use multiples of 720 by 450. Now, it is possible you had a widescreen resolution on your monitor, but that would more likely tend to just distort your picture. It is also possible that you have a reversed resolution. For example, if you have a widescreen monitor, your computer might have the proper resolutions for a tablet PC. A tablet PC can function like a laptop, or be turned around and used the other way around. Basically this means that you would be using your laptop sideways. So, a resolution of 720 by 450 would instead be 450 by 720. Now, if you have a computer that is capable of this kind of resolution tampering, then it is likely assuming that you are using a tablet PC, and so when you set that backwards resolution, it automatically rotates the screen 90 degrees to compensate. If this ever happens to you in the future, here's what you have to do to fix it.
1. Right click on any free area of the desktop (not on an icon, please. Even if your desktop is completely full, there is still space between the icons.)
2. Go down to the word "properties" on the menu and click it.
3. On the box that pops up (which may take a few seconds to arrive - be patient!), there are some tabs along the top that say things like "themes", "screensaver", and "desktop". The one on the far right should say "settings", and therein lies your salvation. Click on it.
4. On the bottom half of the window, left hand side, you will see a slider that says "Screen resolution". Click it with the mouse and find a setting appropriate to your monitor.
Hope that helps. You might want to test that right now, by intentionally setting a bad resolution, to see if that is indeed what the problem was.

Are you sure it's not just the toolbar at the bottom that went to the side of the screen?

Well what you did is you drag the whole bottom taskbar... usually i just lock it so that it wont move around or expand. and to lock it, all you have to do is right click and go to lock taskbar.
