For one month, once every four years countries make peace and come together to play soccer. Countries drop political and economic standings and play soccer for one month as the battle the title of World Champion on the pitch. Theres also the economic importance, for example: The Organizing Commitee for Germany '06 will be spening some $513 million to mount the show. This investment should be mitigated via ticket sales, food and beverage sales, and other commercial interests. But even that won't be enough the rest will come for FIFA's coffers, some $200 million in all.
But that's nothing to the powerful organization. By some calucalations, the World Cup is expected to generate the modest sum of $2 billion!
More than half of that - $1.4 billion - comes from television rights. The rest come from the official sponors of the event, who range ffrom Mc Donald's to Fuji, Budweiser, Adidas, and so on...
In the end, after all the accounts have been paid, FIFA will have made some $130 million. Not bad for an event that lasts just one month!
Besides the honor and prestige that comes with lifting the Cup, there is a cash prize of $19 millions to the Champion. The runner-up will also be receiving money, $17 million. $16 millino will go to both the 3rd and 4th place team. The four teams the reach the quater finals but wind up eliminated there will go home with some $9 million. And the eight teams that are eliminated right at the start of the second round will have some $6 million to take home. Finally to the poor squads who are eliminated in the first round, FIFA pays everyone a minimum of $4.5 million just to participate.

First of all, the WORLD CUP is all about soccer. From North America to the tip of South America, Europe to the Far East, Africa to Australia, younng or old, players or fans, it is the only game that speaks a universal language... GOAL !!!!! Everywhere it is the same word, Goal!! That alone makes it important enough to be set in the Guiness Book of World Records as the only game that has one universal language. What other game can you think of that can have so many millions people glued to their tv sets for a full 90 mins????

Because, no matter what country you are from, you will always cheer for your country, and also Brazil. So, if Brazil wins, everyone is happy, except maybe a few people from the country that took second, and even they have to smile when they look at the game winning goal. So Brazil pretty much unites the world for a month. On a totally different yet somewhat similar note, in Honduras they once stopped a war for a few days so they could watch Pele play soccer. That is just incredibly awesome.

It's a global sport enjoyed by all countries. The USA has been too slow and not supportive of this sport. Kids all over the world play this sport from an early age without uniforms, without a official team and often on dirt. American kids must have uniforms and teams to be on. Whatever happen to 'sandlot' sports?

It brings together countries from all across the globe, unifying them to one aim: to win the World Cup. It stimulates relationships between certain nations, bringing them together. It helps us know more about the world. AND, more than a billion people across the globe just love football/soccer!

I think it gives everyone an equal playing field, no matter if your a big country or a small one, a rich country or a poor one. The World Cup lets everyone be measured by skill alone.

It truly is the most prestigous WORLD EVENT. First of all, soccer is the most watched sport. Secondly, unlike the NBA FInals, the Baseball WORLD Series or NFL Super Bowl.... this really is an event that compares the teams from ALL over the World. So, there you have it. Thats why we go nuts about it! (^_^)

You definately find it important...unless you wouldnt have asked this. I think, though my country doesnt play in the WC yet, it is the biggest international platform. Its a stage for the Asians, Africans, Aussie, Americans and Europeans united. It is also a marketing scope for many orgs like Adidas and Pepsi etc. WC is the reason you and i are makin a conversation!!
