It's like someone walking up to you and handing you the keys to a brand new car and it's paid for. They tell you it's yours to keep.
Now, what's the first thing you would think? What is going on here, this is to good to be true. In other words, with things that good there is always a catch.

You know when something is really good or something great happens often times its hard to believe. So some say you know that's almost too good to be true. When 9 chance's out of 10 it is true.

Quite simply, if something good occurs and you can see NO down side. You either need to look at this occurance more objectively, or you need to wake from your dream. Everything has both pros and cons. Relationships are NEVER wonderful all the time. Jobs are NEVER perfect. People are NEVER good to you ALL the time.. that is life.. you take the good with the bad. How you deal with that and what you make of it can define you. So, if you meet someone and they are nice to you ALL the time.. they appear to be 'perfect', it is vital that you take two steps back and look at the reality of what is happening.

People try and deceive others by making things sound so nice, easy and great to get them reeled into something that's not that good.
They say lines like you can make millions while working from home with very few hours.
It's too good to be true.

when something is too good to be true, it seems really good at first glance, but probably has a major flaw. it's like all those internet ads that only say "get a free ipod"... that sounds too good to be true, and it is, in order to get the free ipod you have to spend money on other stuff first. so the ad was stating something that was "too good to be true".

Sometimes a person will only present something in a very positive way, trying to sell the idea or object to another person, even though they know it is not as good as they are telling you. Later, if you agree to take the object, you find out the deal you got was a bad one and you were duped!

when there is such overwhelming evidence (beyond what would be naturally occurring evidence) that something is a fantastic deal, perfect person, etc.; it means that something is hidden and more than likely the real-deal is closer to normally occurring: deals - situations - people - offers, etc. Thus it's too good to be true because it isn't true.

Well, when referring to how a person is acting, it usually means they are putting on a front-fake, telling you things that is not true. When referring to other things like jobs, there is almost always a catch-lik you have to have certain knowledge, you only get paid commission, or it costs something.

its so great, it must be a dream or something. we may not really think it is a dream, but we "cant believe its real."
or its too good to be true could be it cant be what it really seems. there's gotta be a catch or a flaw or somethin.

It means that something isn't believable because the positives are so emphatic and there are no negatives. It often implies that the person advising you of the situation isn't giving you all of the information.
