I went to Target (Eagle Rock in California) and applied on their little computer system.. I know I match what they are looking for as far as experience, and skills.

It said they run a background check .. Does anyone know if they run this before they interview you or visa versa?

How long should I wait for them to contact me before looking elsewhere for a job? If you work there how long did they take to call you back?

My background is clean .. its just that background checks take a long time..

Tomorrow a new grocery store opens nearby me and they are basically hiring anyone who walks in the door.. Even though I am not sure if I would like the environment working there - should I take it since its a sure thing?? I could start work tomorrow and I'm broke.

most places run the background before the interview. I live in MN, so from what I've gathered, you also have a drug test-not sure if that's for stores as well? These days you have to chase the job, followup, call the store and ask if they have made any decisions yet on the open positions. Yes, this kind of makes you sound desperate, but it shows initiative and that you really would like to work there. Once you do get an interview and you haven't heard-give them a call to see if they have made any decisions, a lot of the time they don't have the time to call everyone. Large companies get so many resumes that you have to make yourself stick out a bit more to be noticed. And I'm not sure about how the stores hire, if everything has to go back to HQ to be approved or not?
good luck

I applied once and then I found out that Target won't support the Salvation Army or the US Soldiers. Sorry, but after finding this out I don't even shop there any more. Back ground checks take only 3 to 5 days if you have lived at the same address for at least 5 years. Not more than 2 weeks if you have moved in the past 5 years. The longest it ever took for my back ground check to go through was right after I retired from the military and had moved 3 times in 5 years, 2 different countries and 2 different states. Germany, Texas and Louisiana. My check took almost 10 days. And that was because of a clerk in Bell county Texas that was dragging azz.

But good luck on your job search.

well----they run a background check if they are interested in hiring you. it can be before your initial interview or can be immediately after the interview if they feel as though you were qualified to be a part of TARGET! if you currently dont have a job--then I suggest you not wait around for 1 store to call you. Look for other jobs and just hope someone calls you. Eventually---you should get a call---keep your fingers crosse...and should u be worrying about what the background check says?????hmmmm.....

I applied to Target in January 2006 for a position in their new store in my neighborhood. I was interviewed by three different people, who were all most encouraging. Alas! I received a card in the mail in two days that they could not hire me "at this time."
I am thinking it was because I had worked at the Home Depot for $0.25/hr., and they could not match it. The interviewers had asked me how low I would go, and I said $9.00/hr. Though I had signed the form for the background check, it had not been done. (My state gives the person option of receiving copy.) So, it you are not a sure hire, don't worry about the check.

Normally, if a background or DCI check are required, they do this before they interview you to determine if you have any "hits". This will then be considered in whether or not you are hired. An employer such as Target may not want to hire someone who has been repeatedly arrested for theft.
Call them in a week if you haven't heard anything so they know you are still interested.

I applied serveral years ago to a Target store, and got a letter in the mail about a month later saying that I wasn't the candidate they were looking for *go figure!!* Not sure about the background info, but I would assume they do that after they've decided to hire you being that it is a cost to them.

My fiance worked at Target while back, and he it took them about a week or two to contact him, and no at that time they didn't do back round checks (don't know if they started now though). Although I just started at Wal-Mart and it took them only a couple days to contact me back for an interview, they didn't run a background check on me, but they did do a drug screening. Good Luck!!!

I worked at target as a stocker in peoria,il. I filled out three applications before they called me. I was hired for flow shift so I had to be there at 3:45am till 12 and for my first week I also stayed longer to help cashier. They waited to do my background check after I was hired and after my drug drop. My friend who started working in human resources told me though that they make you sign the papers and don't really check your background till they are looking for an excuse to fire you. Good Luck.

I applied and got a job years ago, which I didn't accept. They did run my background before the interview, which is one of the factors to why I got an interview. Back then, don't know if it still stands, but I had to pass a written and a drug test. I passed them all, but then decided that it wasn't the place for me.
All that red...
