well, i dun know for sure. but i feel that they have the habit to do things like that. just like men, we tend to bend our leg and put it on our other leg. it's called habit. habit comes from action done continually. actions comes from thoughts. this thoughts may comes from other people. When i saw someone acting cool, i tend have the thoughts to follow him. and eventually, i'll have the habit of doing the "cool thing".

women typically do this because the mouth is open. Some men are aroused by the open mouth of a woman, so traditional and custom have just grown to the covered mouth

i do it because im really self conscious about my appearance, and i dont like my teeth, so i cover my mouth whenever its open.
i also do it when i'm eating, incase i get something (like mayo) on my mouth while i'm eating, before i can wipe my mouth.
