The "slavery" issue was a catalyst.

Mostly it was a conflict over states' rights and whether the federal government can tell the states what to do (such as with the issue of slavery).

The southern states began to secede from the Union after Lincoln's election, due to political conflict that predated Lincoln. He said, "You're not allowed to pull out of the US," they insisted, Lincoln built up his forces at various forts, and the South fired first (I think) -- whereupon Lincoln then felt as if he could attack in return, and the War was on.

If you want more detail to prepare for your test / assignment, you need to research it yourself. Don't fret; it's actually pretty interesting stuff.
