The older rock music was far more controversial than it is now. But I suspect that is mostly because of the kids who loved it way back when, grew up and still do.
The '60's and '70's had the "psychedelic rock" which had a lot to do with drugs and drug use. It was a new way of thinking and people were so unjaded and free and so was their music. The '80's glam rock was thought to be "stupid" simply because of the fact that a lot of songs were about sex, the bands dressed in bright colors and didn't discriminate their audience for the most part. Oh and most of the bands were on drugs. The '90's were sort of a backlash against that, they dressed down and weren't so "happy" in their melodies, though also a lot of bands were on drugs.
Bands now may or may not be, I'm guessing at least a few are. But for the most part, the music sounds old and jaded. And a lot of the bands are older, like the Chili Peppers are still around, Audioslave and Velvet Revolver are new bands but the members have been around awhile. There aren't a lot of new acts out there that are incredibly catchy for the fans. Which is a shame. It'd be nice to have that '60's vibe back where everything's fresh and new sounding.

I'm 45yrs old & I like a lot of todays music. Some of it reminds me of the late 60's & 70's stuff I cut my teeth on.I like the fact that lot of the new stuff is still guitar oriented music.I was really worried about the direction some rock music was going during the 80's with all the keyboards & electronic drums etc.
I think the main difference to me is the lack of Super Groups !!! The big name acts that put out an albums every year & then toured the country.I know there are some big names of todays music that do that but there were a several" back in the day".
There is also an absence of bands playing "progressive rock",like Rush,Kansas,Yes,ELP & others.Dream Theater is a very good band but they have been largly overlooked.
I also agree with one of the other comments about there are no "solos" in songs anymore.Give me a good screaming 2 minute guitar solo in a song any day.

I have been listening to rock music since the 60s and I can find good music in every decade. I don't know how much rocking is being done now, but still enjoy alot of the newer bands; Greenday, Killers, etc. Then you have someone like U2 that spans a few dacades. Is hard to compare, also, when your outlook changes over time. Some I used to enjoy just sound lame to me now.

Current rock music is Ok..I like some stuff..but it does not compare .....The only thing I don't like is that they don't have a solo player anymore. Don't say what was considered rock. This current bands learned from this Rock star bands.....Classic dude! Need to go back and listen to the Legends...and you will see where these new bands get there stuff from...and if you want to go even farther ..the rock bands got it from the blues...Blues/Rock....listen to the classic...that's all I got to say. Lep Zeppelin!!!!!...Jimmy Page....that solo it's awesome....etc..

Current rock music is terrible compared to the "classic rock" of the past.

I grew up with the 70's rock, the 80's hair bands & early 90's Heavy Metal. I think that some of the newer stuff kicks *ss. But I am still partial to the 80's.

There is almost no current rock music. Everything has been recycled and focus-grouped until all the life has been squeezed out of it. It's just product. I can hardly bear to listen any more. I took refuge in jazz and classical a few years ago.

Vastly inferior and only a shadow of what once was. Rock today incessantly tries to recreate the magic that was the 60's and 70's to some degree of mimicry but no real value and staying power.

rock has not neccesarily died, but i have to say that the current music buisness is in a little bit of a downward slope. Rock bands now are being to all sound the same so they can easily be replaced, just as pop rap and other styles. i do not believe that we will have as many classic rock legends when wat is now modern becomes classic, but instead we will have tons of one hit wonders from "that band that i used to listen to"

I think current rock is not as good as it was in the seventies. Bands put alot more thuoght and effort into albums back then it seems. the rock bands today are ok but back in the day bands were great. Ex. Zeppelin, sabbath, pink floyd, santana, cream, the doors, yes, elp, grand funk, the who, they were true artists then.
