When I was young, my mom would put pepper on some foods - which I didn't like. We had a salt and pepper set that was black and white, so of course I made the logical assumption the black and white were indeed opposites, and that too much pepper could be counteracted by adding more salt. (As a result, I eat too much salt to this day ;*)

But of course they'e not really opposites, just two different seasonings that do different things. Similarly, I don't think that vinegar would be the "opposite" of sugar in the sense of some amount of vinegar "canceling out" the taste of sugar - consider a sweet Vidalia onion vinaigrette salad dressing, for example, which might have both sweet and sour aspects to the taste...

Taste is a complex subject! In fact, looking at the Wikipedia articles on taste buds and flavors, it seems that they've coime up with some new ones! So it might be overly simplistic to think of there being an "opposite" to sugar - just different kinds of complements!

Sweet is the opposite of sour, but salt is NOT the opposite of pepper!

Pepper is vegetable matter, the fruit of a flowering vine called Piper nigrum. Salt is a mineral. Our culture likes to pair them up in cute little matching shakers, but they really have no essential relation to each other. They don't have opposites, and neither, in a strict sense, does sugar. But if you're speaking symbolically or poetically, you might contrast sugar with something bitter and disgusting, such as bile.

I don't think that salt is considered the opposite of pepper- I think they are considered compliments of each other. Sweet may be considered the opposite of sour, which are qualities of the taste, but sugar itself would have no opposite as it is an object or food.

Salt isn't opposite to pepper and sweet is not opposite to sour. Why can you ask such an odd question?

Well since sugar is sweet, sour is really the opposite. I think what you are really looking for is sugar and spice.
