I was just wondering why other countries allow it but ours doesn't. Even though our country was founded upon the principles of freedom and letting people be who they were without government interference.

Why? Because it is not just people fighting the government, it is people fighting the churches of America. I don't get why people would want to force a church that doesn't believe in gay marriage to marry them...if that is against the beliefs then that is all there is to it. Now the government is involved because in protecting the opinions and rights of citizens, they also have to uphold religious freedoms...which means even though they are constantly told to "seperate" from the churches and so on, they are obligated to protect them just as much as those on the other side. In response to "I was just wondering why other countries allow it but ours doesn't" it's simple...why should our country HAVE to be like everyone else's...we can have our own opinions and laws.

Actually, the arguments supporting same-sex marriage are utterly useless for polygamy, bestiality, or other others you mentioned.

All the laws relating to marriage rights, spousal benefits, inheritance, community property, etc. -- all for only two adults. Because husbands and wives have exactly the same rights and benefits, gender doesn't matter under the current laws.

Allowing same-sex marriage doesn't change anything in terms of how the laws work, since (aside from the paperwork) they are already gender-neutral.

The same cannot be said for any other relationships that are not between two adults. The laws are not structured to convey property to animals, or grant tax or spousal benefits to more than one spouse. While gender (and race) don't matter, numbers of people (and species of non-people) do matter. So, there is no slippery slope.

The other common argument against same-sex marriage centers around procreation. Opponents try to argue that because homosexuals cannot procreate (get pregnant) in the "old fashioned way" (i.e. without medical assistance), then they shouldn't be married. By that argument, only couples who are capable of biological reproduction should be allowed to married. If one person is sterile, or if the couple refuses to have children, then procreation is not going to happen. But take it one step further. A man and women can currently get married without ever having sex or ever dealing with children. Should the government deny the legal benefits of marriage based on whether people are going to have children? And should the man-woman couple who can't conceive naturally be denied marriage because they can't procreate without medical help? Does that make any sense to anyone?

The real reason that many people are opposed to same-sex marriage is pure prejudice. It may be religious-based prejudice, or pure bigotry, but either way it's not a good reason to enact laws that restrict people's rights or deny the benefits of state-sanctioned monogamy based solely on the gender of those who want to get married.

#1 reason why this country, with all the idiots who still are allowed to freely exist, co-mingle & even breed here, is still the richest, the mightiest & enjoys all the freedoms you've obviously (rather conveniently) neglected to mention when China outpopulates us like almost Ten-fold is cuz, by far, We Are The Greatest Country in The World for a Reason, we reproduce (still far too many idiots but their gene pool is evaporating more rapidly nowadays thanx to AIDS) so screw all this government crap & split, one of the last boats to France is leaving right now~so long, Sailor!

the only reason I ever seen was in the military because married people can get more benefits and you know how guys are alot of us would get married just for the money even though we are straight besides that I think bush should take it in the *** once b/c he would probalby change his opinion, I think that I could care less if anyone wants to marry someone else what happened to the days when marriage was between two people their families and god. Know the government tells people when their married? I was married before I ever got permition from uncle sam..... its in you. I protest this bs about even letting the government know that your married, **** them your married when you say you are, for example I know that their are people who are technically married who dont love eachother as much as some gay couples get the point. **** the government confess your love and life on a bible and swear eternity and you are married.

Even states that voted for Kerry in the last election (Oregon) voted down homosexual marriage, so it's intellectually dishonest to blame Republicans.

Also you ask why other countries allow it. You're misinformed. No country on the planet allows homosexuals to marry each other.

Finally, not being allowed to marry doesn't stop people from being "who they were".

You don't like government interference? I know what you mean. The government stops me from owning a machine gun. It also stops me from robbing banks, dumping toxic waste into rivers, and smoking on airplanes.

DAMN GOVERNMENT!

Another poster wrote: "What goes on between 2 consenting adults is their own business."

REALLY? Can two consenting adults grow pot? Can they counterfit money? Can they make machine guns, pipe bombs, or silencers? Can they cheat on their taxes? Can they lie for each other in court?

Some people are really too cute and loose with cliches.

Because people look down on gays, and would feel insulted if gay people can have what many straights consider "sacred." To allow gay marriage would not raise up gays, but drag down straights. This business about what's best for kids is bullsh*t. If they were really concerned about kids, they'd outlaw gay adoption and foster parenting. Believe it or not, if gay people could marry, they still wouldn't be able to produce any children!

Umm, Canada? Gay marriage IS allowed here, I know that because I have been to several gay weddings. My church (Holy Trinity, in Toronto) was the first to perform the ceremony. People come up from the States to get married here. It should be legal everywhere, in my opinion.

The gay male and the woman do not fit the father figure image (strong and muscular) and is why we are not ready for gay marriage or a woman president. The Conservative male and some Liberal males feel intimidates by them and feel gays and woman cannot protect us like a strong male, like a cowboy. So this is much deeper then a civil rights issue. We have not evolved.

It's a ploy by the republicans to distract from the important issues.I'm not for a christian type gay marriage but I am for a civil union. We should be more worried about the people at the top.

We are governed by simple minded people that think it is their decision to make when they should put on the ballot and let We the People vote whether or not it should be legal. So we do not have true freedom.
