I know different people like different sounds, but it drives my drummer crazy cause his toms stink and we've tried a hundred different things. Any help? I've recorded them with the bottom heads off and they sound great on the recording, but not live. When I tune the top head where I want it and then put the bottom head back on, there's nothing I can do to get rid of the nasty ring.

try tuning the bottom head as loose as it can while still holding on firmly, then tune the top head until you get a pure sound...your toms should be tuned to some kind of progression, like...the tones should be 4 semitones apart, then 3, then 5, and so on...
