I find that it is easiest for me to put my silverware upside-down in the dishwasher. With the fork tines and knife blades down, it is less likely that anyone emptying the dishwasher will be injured. I haven't seen a difference in the cleanliness of my silverware since I have started doing it this way. Also, I put the knives with the knives, the forks with the forks, and the spoons with the spoons so that I can grab all of them at the same time and not have to sort them before putting them away. Hope this helps!

Actually, it usually best to follow the manufacturer's instructions for loading your dishwasher. Depending on the model of your dishwasher, the water could hit the silverware divider from the top, the side or the bottom, and placement of your silverware may need to be adjusted accordingly.
Most manufacturers have the instruction books online now for those who have lost or may never have recieved one.

Putting silverware in the dishwasher with the business end pointing up decreases the amount of spots you get on them when they dry. However, best to put steak knives pointing down to avoid injury.

I point steak knives down, but butter knives and all other silverware facing up. Then when I put it in the drawer it is easy to grab all the forks, then all the spoons, etc. But really it is personal preferance--there is no "better" way.

Normally, I would put the silverware facing up except for sharp knives. The dishwasher we have now drains quite well, so it doesn't seem to matter.

does not matter except if something is small like the end of some silverware is pointed small it will stick through and stop the bottom propeller, as far as cleaning same they are designed to accomplish in any direction

It is a personal preference, however, knives should always be turned down to avoid accidents. That is the only one that really matters. They appear to get equally clean either way in my dishwasher.

I prefer right side up.
It exposes the used end to a stronger spray of water and drains the debris down & away from the used end.

Well my mother puts her silver up. I choose to put them DOWN. Mostly because I never have too many to wash and I have children. I worry about them getting in the dishwasher and cutting themselves.
