These have to be COMIC book artists with at least sone longevity behind them. I would leave Jim Sternko out because he was only in the field for a short time.

Jack "King" Kirby was the single greatest comic artist of all time. His style was the stencil by which all other artists learned. His panels are considered to be the very best in showing exactly what is going on with a minimum of extra clutter. Stan Lee himself used samples of Kirby's work to show blossoming artists in the 60's how different things should be done.

The sheer volume of work is enough to stagger the imagination. The list of just how much comic art he did is far too long to list. Although Much of his work is considered "cartoony" by today's standards, there is no doubt whatsoever that his style has influenced every artist to come down the pike in the past 50 years

If you're just talking about art, that would be Luis Royo (yes, he did comics before he became an illustrator).

But for people who are still doing comics till now, here's my top list artists currently:

1. Joseph Michael Linser (Dawn)
2. Alex Ross (freelance artist who mainly do jobs for Marvel and DC)
3. Paolo Serpieri (Italian erotic comic artist; the "A s s Man")
4. Dave McKean (Usually works with Neil Gaiman, Black Orchid)
5. Stan Lee (We all know who he is)
6. Jim Lee. (We all know who he is, too)
7. Frank Miller (Sin City)
8. Michael Turner (the original Witchblade artist; and he's got some interesting history too)
9. Dave Sim and Gerard (Cerebus the Aadvark; I like their over exaggeration in black and white with heavy inks. Makes it somewhat political, yet narrative)

Okay, maybe my brain is dying and mixing things up in the process, but Stan Lee isn't an artist, he's a writer.

Gil Kane gets my vote for best artist, although Jack Kirby and John Buscema are right up there with him.

It would have to be placed in different categories since each era or media had its own type of art.

Classic - Jack Kirby
Old School - Joe Kubert
Paint Media - Alex Ross
New School - Jim Lee

Future Names might be - Micheal Turner and Pat Lee

Alex Ross, the person who drew or painted Kingdom Come, the DC Comic Novel is pretty crazy. If you've read it you know what I mean, if you haven't, check it out!

It won Best Artist and Best Limited Series awards.

jim lee on his uncanny X-men run in the early 90's was one of the greatest artists of his time.

mark bagley showing some greatness with the ultimate spiderman run, and his amazing spider-man runs was just awesome.

don't forget jack kirby, he did the early marvel comics, not stan lee.

I see we share a similiar dream! One very important thing you need also is the ability to write. This helps to create dialogue and interesting plot. To get started I would say start online. Most newcomer comic artist start that way since its the easiest way to get found

I know he hasn't been around for as long as some, but Alex Ross is constantly blowing me away. All due respect to Kirby, Ditko, Swan and the rest of the classics but none of them can hold a candle to Ross's skill.
