You need to be very careful with exercises if things are painful right now - doing the wrong exercises will certainly aggravate your condition.

How far down your leg are your symptoms? Where exactly do you feel it? What makes it worse or better?

Sciatica is a very general term to describe numerous conditions, ranging from a tight pyriformis muscle to a bulging/herniated disc. True sciatica originates in from your lower back. Some back problems respond to bending forward, others bending backwards. That is why it is so difficult to give specific advice without a thorough evaluation.

Look at the following website: www.mckenziemdt.org This will give you some more information and allow you to look up your nearest physical therapist who can specialize in conditions like yours. They can determine where the pain is coming from and treat you accordingly.

Good luck!

When I had sciatic nerve problems a couple of years ago my doctor put me on pain meds so i could sleep. I also did some physical therapy and accupuncture. The main thing the therapist did was put a cold pack on the sciatic area on my behind and some electrical prods (forget the real name) around it and I found that I was feeling much better within 2 weeks.
I still have to be careful not to twist or lift anything too heavy because it can flare up at any time.
If you can't get to a dr and need immediate relief try a tylenol or mortin and an ice pack. I'm not a doctor, this is just my opinion.

Well, there is a fairly new one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. This treatment really seems to stop a main cause of sciatica, and I know of some persons who got rid of all symptoms within a short period of time.

Anyway, it's worth trying - you'll be amazed.

Just - the treatment is available in California and Europe only, costing approx. 220 dollars. It worth even a long journey! :-)

First and foremost, consult a doctor / therapist on your condition. at the moment, you can do a couple of stretches to alleviate the pain (if you are able to). Hip roll is a good stretch to begin with. so does supine hamstring stretch. other beneficial stretches include knee hugs, cat stretch, etc. strengthening exercises include bodylifts, lying leg raises, knee-ups, adductor & abductor exercises. as you have a painful condition, do each exercise in a slow & controlled manner. do not rush. take care.
