The battle was fought in central Virginia over the same ground as the Battle of Gaines' Mill during the Seven Days Battles of 1862. In fact, some accounts refer to the 1862 battle as the First Battle of Cold Harbor, and the 1864 battle as the Second Battle of Cold Harbor. Soldiers were disturbed to discover skeletal remains from the first battle while entrenching. Despite its name, Cold Harbor was not a port city. It described two rural crossroads named for a hotel located in the area, which provided shelter (harbor), but not hot meals. Old Cold Harbor stood two miles east of Gaines' Mill, New Cold Harbor a mile southeast. Both were approximately 10 miles (16 km) northeast of the Confederate capital of Richmond.

In the overland campaign of 1864, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant with the Army of the Potomac battled General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia for six weeks across central Virginia. At the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna and Totopotomoy Creek, Lee repeatedly stalled, but failed to stop, Grant's southward progress toward Richmond. The next logical military objective for Grant was the crossroads styled by locals Old Cold Harbor.

I think somewhere around Marylin, 50,000 killed and wounded. It did not go well for the Union Side. Do not quote the above it is only from memory.

They were nuts those people. There battle tactic were outdated. They had repeating rifles and they didn't use them because they thought the men would waste ammunition. They fought like they did in the Revolutionary War just standing in a line offering to get shot. Taking no consideration of the improved accuracy of the mini-ball and rifled gun barrels.

Virginia
Altho it can be said the South won the battle tactically, ie, they maintained their entrenched positions, Grant actually won strategically by attrition, ie, the rebel army was reduced with no replacements while the union losses were made up. This was Grant's 'sledge-hammer' tactics during the last months of the war and it eventually beat the southern army..
