It wasn't weird at all. The three men were in a bathtub in the ocean, fully clothed.

Rub a dub dub,
Three men in a tub,
And who do you think they be?
The butcher,
The baker,
The candlestick maker,
They all sailed out to sea.

Worse ones are Baa Baa Black Sheep, and This Old Man. The first one is about a master speaking to his slave, and the second one is about an old man playing on a child's knee. We don't sing either one any more at our schools, and there are others.

I'm wondering why so many people think that this rhyme has to do with gay people. I think it is just a rhyme. Some nursery rhymes were made up because people back then were not allowed to say certain things out loud, so they made up little rhymes. Like, "Ring-a-round the rosies, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down". That nursery rhyme really was talking about the plague that was killing people at that time. People that died from the plague were not buried and to prevent or at least mask the smell of the decaying bodies, posies were put into their pockets. Ashes, ashes, we all fall down, means "we all will die"....there were a few more nursery rhymes that had meanings, but not all of them did.

I think most nursery rhymes sound strange, scary , or cruel..

when the bough breaks the cradle will fall ... ouch
An old woman lived in a shoe with so many kids... probably on my tax dollars.
Three blind mice, the farmers wife cut their tails with a carving knife.. whoa.!

You must remember that this came from a children's nursery rhyme. At the time it was written there was little or no knowledge about homosexuality and therefore it was only a rhyme with no other connotation.

Nursery rhymes many years ago will make little sense today. For instance, the Old Woman in the Shoe, would be child abuse today.

Nope. Our family thinks it's pretty odd. My Mom pointed that one out to us. There are a couple more nursery rhymes that are a bit odd as well. I can't recall what they are at the moment though.
