I grew bird house gords one year. I cut them off leaving 4-6 inches of vine and let dry outside. I let some dry on the vine - so I could harvest the seeds. Ones I left on the vine seem to not keep the nice perfect shape.
It was alot of fun. I was amazed at the length of the vine 50 ft - I grew it close to chain link fence - a perfect enviorment. It produced about 40 beautiful gords and 4-5 mutants.
HAVE Fun and try painting-decorate a couple.

Before trying to dry the gourds, wash them in a mild bleach solution. This will kill any bacteria on the gourds and keep them from rotting. Hang them in a dry area where they can have air circulation between the gourds. Don't let them touch each other. Happy drying!
