I teach 9th grade Biology and am looking at a class size of 30 in each class w/ no assistants. Just wondering how that compares to classes in other states. I am in Alabama.

Depends on school and district. For example in my district in our new school the room were made for 24 kids however in reality it took three years to rip the furniture out and get the right stuff to fit the 31-34 kids we start with every year. That is no assistants and a 9th grade class. Seems to be the norm here and at every conference I have been to. I teach Chemistry with anywhere from 28-34 students in a class and it is rough but you will find depending on your style that it may make no difference. Some teachers will struggle with the large numbers others will hardly miss a beat.

In Washington it's about 25 but it should be closer to 10 or 15, so that people can really get enough time to work through the topics and individual attention from the teacher.

I am an educator in Chicago and that is actually small for us. I do think though that more than 25 is really pushing it. The kids can't get effective lab time and individual attention.
