Good suggestions from the others, but I would say TWIN PEAKS for both night and day viewing, trust me on this one. I lived in SF for many years.

Not being from there, but visiting many, many times...I absolutely love two particular areas.

The first is on the Marin Headlands...take the Golden Gate Bridge north, towards Sausalito.
Look for the exit to the headlands and drive up the road about a mile...you'll see a number of great parking places to check it out.
Go before sundown...you'll double your pleasure with a sunset as well!

The second is in Sausalito.
Park near the Bridgeway Cafe (633 Bridgeway Avenue) or anywhere within that area.
Walk along the sidewalk and you'll get a spectacular water-eye view of SF.

A final location would be in some of the restaurants in Tiburon...a great place to dine with the twinkling lights of SF in the south.

God!
I love the bay area...I just wish I could afford to live there!

Twin Peaks in the city, or the Marin Headlands or Yerba Buena Island.

An evening ferry ride from Saucilito to San Francisco (http://goldengateferry.org/) is a unique way to get outstanding views from a number of angles and distances.

At the very top of Russian Hill, there is a secret garden. To find it you must travel up Vallejo street from Van Ness Avenue until it dead-ends into a high concrete wall at Jones Street. Turn left or right on Jones until you find the hidden ramps that will take you up to one last block of Vallejo Street that sits on the highest point of Russian Hill. At the very top there is a secret garden that looks straight down upon the beauty of San Franciso's Finacial District with sweeping views from the Golden Gate Bridge on your left to the Oakland Bay Bridge to your right...expansive, majestic, secluded, quiet, and very romantic...a great place for a picnic with that special someone.

marin headlands. to get there, cross the golden gate bridge, and take the first exit off to the right past the parking lot. take the first left, through the tunnel, and then wind up the hill (do not get back on the bridge). the first bunker you see you can park at. park there, walk all the way along the bunker to the end, and you will be face to face with the golden gate bridge, with the entire city behind it.
