Deanna made a good suggestion. Look for the program The Deadliest Catch and you will see how those crabs are caught. Being a crab fisherperson is a very tough job.

King Crabs are caught in large pots, weighing upwards of 600 pounds each. The King Crab is processed either at a land-based (shore) plant or at sea. Land-based plants produce a better product because the use of fresh water during processing. Only live crabs are accepted at shore plants so to keep the crab alive on board, they are placed in massive live tanks built into the hulls of the vessels and have flow through seawater systems.

I hope this helps.

No, When the crabs are caught they are kept alive until sold at the dock. You cannot sell dead crabs. If you watch deadliest catch you will notice they throw out the dead ones. My parents once owned a shrimp boat. The same rules apply.

No, they are kept in holding tanks and delivered to processing ships. These are the ships that will freeze and bag the crabs for sale.
The show Deadliest Catch is wonderful about how the crabbing industry works.

Usually, crabs are boiled at the dock as soon as they leave the ship. They are frozen after that.

Unless we are talking about the middle of the summer, I suspect they will get frozen just sitting on the deck of the boat. Alaska is very, very cold, you know.

I believe they are either packed in ice until they return to the dock and then "Flash-Frozen". Or they are directly "Flash-Frozen" right there on board as soon as they pull in the crab traps.

I'm guessing no. Although it would be better if they were frozen to keep them fresh, I think keeping them alive would be more effective. That way they can travel farther distances without having to worry about the ice melting and the meat going bad.

Yes, they are frozen right on the boat at sea when they are caught.

No, they are frozen after they take them off the boat. They would need to clean them first I would think before they would freeze them.
