As a restaurant manager I think that 20% of the bill is the standard. If you have bad service than you should leave less, or great service you should leave more. Just remember that most servers make about $2.38 an hour depending on the state they work in. The money that pays their bills and feeds their kids comes from the tips that are left for them. Just base it on the quality of the service. And if the kitchen messes up or takes a long time please DO NOT take it out on the server, it is not their fault. I usually leave at least 25% but I am also in the business.

One thing to remember is the % scale only works if you are dining out normally, like if you go into a restaurant, eat and leave. Then leave 15-20% (or more). What people need to think about is when you go meet someone for drinks or coffee and talk for an hour or two, or more, and then you DO NOT leave just a buck or two. Think about the amount of time you have taken up camping out on that table and the amount of $$$ that server could have made if they could ahve turned that table over a few more times. Please, drink only people, leave at least 5 bucks each for your server. If you are a regular this will ensure you will always have a full cup in the future!

Yes, the standard amount is 15% of the total, or 20% if the service was really outstanding. If you have a 2 for 1 coupon or anything else that reduces the price, you should still tip from the amount you would have paid, since the server is giving you a discount but doing the same amount of work.

Since I was a waitress, I can be very critical or very understanding. I usually leave 15-20% (sometimes more) if the waitress was good and if they were okay, 10% and if they were completely rude and had no apologies, I will leave change. In my expirences, its more insulting to get a very bad tip than no tip at all.

Normally, leave 15% of the total (before tax), but higher if the service was extraordinarily good. The easiest way to figure out the 15% is to double the sales tax on the bill, and add that amount to the bill. It works in California, where we have 8.5% sales tax. The tip comes out to 17%, but it's close enough.

typically, the accepted amount is 15%-20%. I usually leave 20% if the service is at least good. i was a waitress and i appreciated the people who left me 20%. sometimes i'll leave more (like 25%) if the service is excellent. in most states you just double the tax to get the tip, but if your state's tax is less than 7.5%, that doesn't always work.

If you want to be known as a good tipper, always leave 20% or more. Servers remember you and depending on how you tip determines the type of service you get the next time you go there.
