The most important thing in any relationship is Character. Character is the REAL person...everything I say, do, think, feel, act, and react...whether people are watching or not...more often not. Character cannot lie because eventually it shows in actions. Character is the true test of what I do when no one is watching, or what I say and really mean.
In relationships, character dictates whether or not I will keep my word to you or carry the relationship in a manner that is honest and honorable. Regardless of the type of relationship...if I am EXPECTED not to lie, then I don't even if it hurts to tell the truth. Character KEEPS his word, even if it cost!
Without strong character, dishonesty, lies, cheating, and ALL other types of poison spoil a relationship. The final thing about a person with no character is that they would misuse or abuse you just like they would anybody else, so don't feel bad about the situation. For example, many people have fathers who do not participate in their lives, don't blame yourself, he has bad character and would have been a bad father to anybody...it's not you.
Character is engrafted in our souls and is changed only by choice. A person with bad character has to make a conscious decision to change and then put much effort behind correcting that area of their character.

I think that the #1 most important thing is communication. You need to be able to talk to your partner about any and everything, or else your relationship is not worth sh*t. Sorry to be so harsh, but I call them as I see them. If you can't express your fears, angers, disapointments, desires, irritations, and goals to, with, or about this person, then it is not real. And most of all, that includes the difficult things - the times when you don't do something right, when your partner is driving you nuts, when you think someone else is hot, or when you really want something odd. If you cant say that to them (or if they act weird, juvinille, and annoying whenever you do), then it is not a real relationship.

The most important thing in a relationship is RESPECT. When you respect each other you have trust, honesty, and you honor your partners wishes, whether they are for monogamy, alone time, or whatever you both need to make it work. It's 50/50 no matter what. If you can't commit to any part of a relationship then you shouldn't be there.

Understanding, empathy, and most importantly, love. Not the ooey-gooey sticky stuff, just simple, ordinary love. It's possible to love different people differently...I know I've experienced this for myself. There's no reason why love needs to be restricted to one and only one person...you should love your parents, kids, siblings, friends, and even in some cases, your co-workers...of course, this is the platonic-type of love in almost all of these relationships!

well i think LOVE should be the most important thing in a relationship, if theres no love you cant call that a romantic relationship, i'm assuming thats what we're talking about, .....and i guess all the other bits and pieces should follow.....trust, communication, loyalty etc

the most important things are communication, love and acceptance. the true relationship begins with the awareness of why you have entered into it. Seek not to get from your relationships, but to put into them. Thus love and bliss grow from giving, not receiving.
