i have a computer with only an dial up-jack can i plug an ethernet cable in?

No they are different cables you plug the ethernet cable into a dsl modem then a phone cord from the modem to the phone jack

No. But you can add an Ethernet card to connnect to a high speed network if that is your purpose. You didn't specify whether or not it was a laptop or desktop so if it is a desktop you can buy a PCI Ethernet card, you can get one for less than $10. If you have a laptop then you can pick up a PCMCIA Ethernet card, if you have a PCMCIA card slot (and most laptops do).

NO way the eithernet cable is quite larger then a dial up jack

An RJ45 plug (ethernet) will not fit in an RJ12 jack (telephone). It's too wide.
