When you have a responsibility to do something for someone else.
For example, if someone is trespassing on my land, and hurts himself in a dangerous area of my lawn that I didn't mark as dangerous, then he sues me, the legal question would be whether I have a duty of care to the tresspasser.

In nursing it means that ethical dilimmas are best solved by paying attention to relationships, and the narratives andor stories of the participants.
I guess it depends on what field you are going into.
