Dell is a well established name and are great machines, but because they are so big they dont have to give price breaks and dont. So unless you are fixated on Dell you can get more for the buck with HP or even EMACHINES, which are awesome now that they merged with Gateway. Both of these companies are putting some serious machines out for little money, sometimes as much as half what the comparable Dell would cost.

I have a higher end Dell laptop for school and it works great except that i've had to replace the battery and dvd burner and it's less than a year old. Dell customer service was verv prompt in shiping me relpacement parts (overnight) however it was annoying to not have a fully operational computer, especially because it is necessary for a lot of my schoolwork. I would deffinently recomend getting the extended warrenty if you do get a Dell.

Dell is not so great.
Many Dell printers take ink cartridges only available through them.
Their customer service is ok at best and they often use hard sell tactics.
If you order by phone and want anything specific instead of their stripped down special the price is likely not be very competitive. They will try to sell you all sorts of things you don't want or need.
They are nice to customers who don't know much about computers. In fact for their home use computer I suspect they prefer customers who don't know too much!

Michel R summed it up pretty good... a Dell is a POS. I hate dells. Everytime I use one, i lose some kind of data. its like an american hammer(normal PC) versus a mass market hammer from China(dell). the chinese hammer is cheap, but its going to fly off its handle and kill you
dells are like Ikea furniture.. it'll go together just fine until you get one last peice.. it'll be broken/bent/crushed and they won't replace it for you. I got my computer through InfoTech, which sell alittle bit below average price and their fantastic. have never had aproblem with mine.
Everyone i know agrees.. Dells suck(these are all computer nerds talking!)

excelent, BUT it depends on your purpose.
Daily use, yeap. They are pretty good.
I use my cousins Dell and its pretty good for a 300 dollar 3ghz Intel computer
But im use to mine
a custom built
3ghz AMD FX-57, 2 7800 GTs (videocard) its makes any prebuilt computer seem like its a pile of garbage.
But it may not to you. SO
if you are in to gaming, go with a custom built one (not htat hard to build, just follow all the directions and have a firend that builds computers help you step by step)
but if u just surf the web, go with the Dell computers

Dell is actually on the fall to tell you the truth the small dealing i have had with deal have made me even question why people deal with thier inferior product.
One example is that DELL is a OEM seller they are exactly like IBM dell really does not make any money on hardware (thats a loss leader) prodcut meaning they sell the product to sell you software. For example while the system may cost them 200$ which it could with even the base line CPU's they make thier money off selling Windows XP and other software (they get XP for about 5-20$ a copy [xp-home] 30-50$ [xp-pro]) . There more into marketing then product support.
Two thier waranty is the worst when you buy a dell product its only for 3 mos. intially most manufacturers offer you a year (basic) then you pay for more with dell its only three months.
Three, thier support is terriable i called to get a key for a watch guard upgrade we purchased after being on the phone for three hours i was told i would have to call the manurfacuturer. I called them and they told me to call dell. After re-calling the manufacturrer they said if i sent them the orginal invoice i could recieve the thing i should of had to begin with. I did not mind doing that but Dell has access to my information and should store such information for you like micrsoft does for Dell customers (e-open license). Thier computers are terriably speced on the Intel platform and while they sell AMD chips after market they are extremly over priced.
Dell in my book ranks as low as sony as it relates to customer service and satisfaction. Plus you want to buy parts that are actually upgradeable. THe entry series offer little upgrade in the way as they are micro-ATX towers the bays are small and usually only fit one CD-ROM and one disk drive. This is exactly what e-machine used to do and while your getting a bargin PC your get what you pay for. Many PC's are upgradeable and great care should goto one that can actually be used for years to come. Avg. Lifespan of a dell is about 2-3 years. one you purchase from a system builder (significantly longer).
If you need a computer then just inquire your local computer store. They can meet your needs and actually have someone who knows what product you actually need, plus then there is always someone to got back to when there are problems.
For a laptop i would buy an HP one of the best support departments i have ever seen. They send you what you need, and while thier bassed in india you can connect to a US agent if you would like to speak to one.
A turrion 64 is about 1000$ with all the goodies 14000 with the 3 year accidenctal support. Most laptops and Comptuers today should be bought with 64 bit chips as the switch will happen in two years when 32 bit OS's are passe. (not speaking about VISTA but Blackcomb)
Dell at this time does not offer a 64 bit laptop or a consumer grade 64 bit processor unless you want to spend a lot of money on the Itanium 2 series.
NoteL Alienwares are Dell. Dell acquired them this year.

I bought a Dell XPS desktop and the hard drive was bad. Had to spend hours reconfiguring it while talking to the techs in India.
