This is important so please pay attention. AWARENESS!!
Look around while you are walking. Everyone who comes contact with you: Look them in the eye, dont glance away til they do. Be hyper-viligant. Scan your surroundings. It is most important that you stand tall and erect. swing your arms when you walk, dont have them in your pockets, dont have a purse readily availible for them to snatch. This works. For me, everyday.

Ok, walking home at night is very dangerous but if you are walking around crackheads that is more dangerous because you don't know what they will do to get their next fix. I would check with the local police and see what they have to offer. But I would never walk home with something to carry or a uniform on . They might think you have money since your coming from work. I GOT ROBBED BY A CRACKHEAD IN BROAD DAY LIGHT. But I know he was pissed because I had just spent my last $5 dollars in the store he got me coming out off.

Walking like you belong there. I used to walk some pretty tough neighboorhoods in college just by acting like I knew where I was going, not in a hurry, not too slow. I didn't look around like a scared rabbit but I didn't stare at the ground either. Best bet is to get a cheap, second hand bike. Less time traveling will cut down the risk.

A LOADED handgun. And don't keep it zipped away where you couldn't just whip it out. Keep your hand on it in your purse, I would suggest. Just pulling it out will make most run for the hills, I assure you.
