Currently resurrected by the bio of Truman Capote movie "In Cold Blood" is his investigation to the murder of a family in the Midwest.
How about the bio of Kurt Cobain or Jim Morrison? Rock stars can be really messed up.

Try "I Need Love", by Klaus Kinsky, or any novel by Henry Miller. It's all biographical. The Anaïs Nin's Diaries are great reading too. You might also like Erika Jong's work.

If you want to look into the mind of a mad-man, read Hitler's "Mein Kampf" translated "my struggle." He wrote it himself and lets just say it did not make sense to me. But it shows you how messed up he was.

My suggestion would be to try looking up Roman emperors. Some to note would be Nero or Caligula, they were interesting characters.
