On Nov 4, 1979 a group of 'students' over took the American Embassy in Tehran. 66 were originally taken, some were released fairly early on. 53 remained hostages until Jan 20, 1981.
In April of 1980, a rescue mission was attempted. The mission failed miserably, largely due to poor planning and an inopportune sand storm.

Wasn't that when all these Iranian students climbed over the walls of the US embassy in Iran and took over the embassy? Then they held the 52 people inside the embassy hostage for over a year. But they eventually released them.
